I read in the New York Times today that Elizabeth Edwards, a fellow breast cancer survivor and ex-wife of former Senator John Edwards, just learned that the cancer has spread to her liver and her doctors have advised against further medical treatment.
I was moved by what she posted on her Facebook page, and have copied it here. And I will admit to being moved that she didn’t mention God, but instead talked about a different kind of faith, and her dedication to having a positive impact on the world.
“I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces – my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope. These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that.”
“There are certainly times when we aren’t able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It’s called being human. But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful.”
I know I keep saying this, but once again, I am reminded that an external God is not necessary for a person to be truly religious. Because in my book, Elizabeth Edwards is one hell of a religious woman. I wish her well, and will keep her in my prayers.
Hi Jennifer!
All of us survivors can relate to Elizabeth’s story. Having a purpose in life, a path to follow and best of all, being alive to see the fruits of your labors is a wonderful thing. I’ll say it again, go back and sing your song about being alive! I go for my annual mammogram on Friday and I am as nervous as can be!

I hope all goes well on Friday. (I’m inclined to say break a leg, but that seems a little inappropriate.)
I promise to write a post about the song Aliveness.
